Broward County Library presents Education by Design as an educational resource which we hope will be of interest to scholars, collectors, and the broader public who would like to find out more about the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and its little-known sub-agency, the Museum Extension Project (MEP).

Because the WPA was a federal agency, copyright restrictions do not extend to the reprinting of works produced by that agency. As the proprietor of the Education by Design website, Broward County Library allows the free use of any material on this website for non-commercial educational, or "fair use." We include the following statement on each record in the searchable image database:

The materials depicted here were prepared by the federal government (by and through the WPA's Museum Extension Project). These materials, or digitized images of such material, are not copyright protected as per 17 U.S.C. sec. 105.

Broward County Library welcomes the educational use of material on this website in the classroom or any other learning environment. The items created by the MEP and other state-administered WPA visual aid projects were intended for use as educational aids in public schools, libraries and children's museums during the period the WPA was in operation (1935-1943). Of course, since that time, new research available to scholars has rendered some of the educational value of these objects obsolete. In addition, some of the descriptions and terminology contained within several of the accompanying texts would be considered perhaps offensive in a more modern socio-political climate (see our disclaimer for more information).

Thus we caution that supplementary research on more modern-day sources should be consulted before accepting at face value the content contained within any of the textual material found on Education by Design. These texts are being presented for their intrinsic value as historical artifacts rather than as authoritative scholarly works on the subject matter they deal with.

We hope you enjoy exploring Education by Design. If you have any questions or comments regarding the site, please do not hesitate to contact us.
